Get the Sunday Paper!

One of the best places to find deals on everyday items is the Sunday newspaper.  Most of us read our news online these days, but there is still something wonderful about getting the paper on Sunday and flipping through the inky pages while drinking a cup of coffee (I happen to also be watching a horror movie because it's Halloween).

The Sunday L.A. Black Friday

Black Friday is the thrifty shopper's favorite day of the year!  But guess what, it's not just one day any more.  According to this article in the New York times, Black Friday specials can be found now through Thanksgiving and into December.  What's even better is that Black Friday no longer means waking up early to stand in long lines.  You can access these deals from the comfort of your own computer - I love technology!

American Airlines

It's good for consumers when airlines engage in a little friendly competition.  American Airlines has a special that's similar to Southwest for travel between December 1 - December 15, 2010, and January 4 - February 16.  If Southwest doesn't fly to your desired destination, try American Airlines.  The sale (and the Southwest sale) ends on October 28.

Get Great Deals on Hotel Rates

My friend, Alex called me today to let thank me for posting the great Southwest deal.  Her and her husband are flying to Las Vegas for a ridiculously low price - about $150 for two round trip tickets.  Alex and her husband have a favorite room at Caesar's Palace which was about $360 on Hotels.com.  Yikes!!  Alex then did something that I always try to do when booking a hotel - call them directly.  You never know what unadvertised specials they may have going.  She discovered that the room was 25% off during a select time period that her trip happened to fall in.  Way to be thrifty, Alex!

This reminded me of my trip to Big Sur last summer.  My boyfriend and I wanted to stay at the Ventana Inn but were a little astounded at the price.  I called the hotel and come to find out, they were offering a $200 dining credit and free bottle of wine for each night of our stay.  It was WELL worth it!!!

Also, it doesn't help to have an AWESOME travel agent to book rooms for you.  They can often get you great upgrades!

Southwest

Anyone planning a trip somewhere that Southwest travels to?  With this sale I pretty much have to visit someone (Great Aunt Martha in Sacramento??).

Aside from letting you know about fantastic sales, I also want to give you some practical tips about how to hold on to those hard earned dollars.  I have a great example from today that I want to share with you.  For some this is a no-brainer, for others it will be fantastic information.

I don't know if you have heard of Mint.com but it's a great way to track your money.  Today I got a notice from Mint.com that I was charged two $12 fees on my savings account.  Whaaaaat?!??!  Now here's the tip.  Instead of just ignoring the notice I called my bank to ask what it was for.  Apparently I had too many transfers from my savings account.  I asked for the fee to be waived and was quickly denied.  Boooo.....  It could have ended there but I asked to speak to a supervisor who looked at my account and saw that I haven't had any fees in the past 12 months, and he was happy to reverse BOTH charges.

It never ever hurts to ask for a fee to be waived.  Worst case scenario, they say no.  Best case scenario, you get your money back!

Hello and welcome to The Deal Huntress!  It seems that everyone has a blog these days, doesn't it?  Well I'm jumping on that bandwagon.  The other day I was bragging to my boyfriend about how I had saved over 35% on a recent purchase at the grocery store.  The excitement I get from a good deal is the same as a hunter capturing their prey.  Seriously, I get THAT excited.  Anyway, he told me to start a blog and share my tips and tricks with the world - well, those of you who are interested. 

Nothing thrills me more than being thrifty.  Don't get thrifty confused with cheap though.  Cheap people make me cringe.  I'm not going to help you earn a million dollars, but I will help you save a few bucks.
